The University of Huddersfield основан в 1825 году как научно-технический институт Хаддерсфилда. В 1986 году the Huddersfield Scientific and Mechanic Institute был переименован в технический колледж (the Huddersfield Technical College).
Впоследствии, в ходе развития колледжа, увеличивалось количество студентов, и появилась потребность в открытии новых факультетов и специальностей. В ходе истории Вуз не раз менял свой статус и название. В свой 150-летний юбилейный год, 1991, количество студентов выросло до 10 000.
